How does a heat
pump work?

A heat pump is a heating and cooling system that consists of two parts: an indoor unit called an air handler, and an outdoor unit similar to a central air conditioner. That outside unit is the heat pump, which absorbs the hot air from inside the house and releases it outside in the summer. In winter, even though it feels cold outside, there is heat energy in the air. The heat pump takes the available heat and pumps it into the house. In essence, the heat pump takes warm air from one place to another depending on where it’s wanted or needed.

A heat pump can be an effective part of a total home system that includes a gas, oil or propane furnace. With this type of a duel-fuel option each system operates at peak efficiency. When the heat pump can’t produce enough heat, the furnace kicks on and will eventually take over if it can operate more efficiently than the heat pump.

The biggest advantage of a heat pump is its efficiency. Because it is simply moving heat from one place to another instead of generating it, it doesn’t require as much energy. That means a larger long-term savings on your fuel bills.
